Electramar, the first in a series of 12 hybrid vessels being built by the Chowgule and Company shipyard in India for ESL Shipping's AtoB@C Shipping subsidiary, was christened in downtown Helsinki on 15 May.

The ship's godmother is Paula Ojala, chartering manager at global steel company SSAB, a long-standing client of both AtoB@C Shipping and ESL Shipping.

“The collaboration between SSAB, ESL Shipping and AtoB@C Shipping has a rich history dating back decades, and I am deeply honored to be the godmother of this wonderful, energy-efficient vessel,” Ojala said.

“Both the steel and shipping industry are entering a new era, where fossil-free fuels are gradually being replaced by more sustainable alternatives,” said Mikki Koskinen, Managing Director, ESL Shipping and Chairman of the Board of Management, AtoB@C Shipping AB. SSAB is one of the leaders in steel Green, and we are happy to have her represented as the godmother of the ship.

Electramar is a modern ship that produces up to 50% less CO2 emissions than the current generation of ships, thanks to its connection to shore power, the installation of large batteries and improved cargo consumption. It also provides quieter and cleaner operation while in port.

Designed to transport a wide range of bulk and bulk products, such as steel, forest products, fertilizers and project cargo, the vessel features a long, unobstructed deck, allowing more deck cargo and longer project cargo to be loaded than current ships in the fleet.

Stellamar, the second ship in the series is currently sailing from India to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope. Production of the ninth unit, Fleximar, began in April with a steel cutting ceremony.
